Biodacyna ophthalmicum 0.3% is a topical ophthalmic antibiotic eye-drop solution containing amikacin sulfate equivalent to amikacin base 3 mg/mL (0.3%). Amikacin is a semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from kanamycin A, distinguished by its acyl side chain that protects the molecule from most aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes — giving it activity against many gentamicin-, tobramycin-, and netilmicin-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. Its mechanism of action is irreversible binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA and inhibition of protein synthesis with bactericidal effect. ATC class S01AA21 (ophthalmic anti-infectives, aminoglycosides). The eye-drop formulation provides high local antibiotic concentrations on the ocular surface with negligible systemic absorption from the conjunctival sac.
⚠️ Warnings
Use only when bacterial aetiology is suspected or confirmed; culture and sensitivity testing recommended for refractory or vision-threatening infections. Avoid prolonged use beyond 7-10 days because of resistance selection and superinfection risk. Do not wear contact lenses during treatment of an active eye infection. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface — risk of contamination. Discontinue and seek ophthalmological advice if symptoms worsen, severe pain develops, photophobia or visual disturbance appear. Caution in patients with prior aminoglycoside hypersensitivity. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: use only if clearly necessary.
