Buprenorphine is an analgesic agent from the opioid class, used for the treatment of moderate to severe pain and for the treatment of opioid dependence. The medicinal products are administered sublingually, transdermally, and parenterally. The most common possible adverse effects include sedation, drowsiness, hypotension, respiratory depression, headache, miosis, dizziness, sweating, nausea, and vomiting.
Buprenorphine (ATC N02AE01) has analgesic properties. Its effects are based on partial agonism at μ-opioid receptors and antagonism at κ-opioid receptors. The effects during withdrawal are attributed to its prolonged binding to μ-receptors, which reduces drug craving over an extended period.
