Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antispasmodics; ATC code: A03BB01
Buscopan has a spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal, urogenital, and biliary tract. Hyoscine butylbromide is a quaternary ammonium derivative that does not cross the blood-brain barrier into the central nervous system. Therefore, no central anticholinergic adverse effects occur. Its peripheral anticholinergic effect results from ganglionic blockade in the visceral wall and antimuscarinic activity.
⚠️ Warnings
In cases of severe unexplained abdominal pain that persists or worsens, or if symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, changes in bowel movements, abdominal tenderness, decreased blood pressure, fainting, or blood in the stool occur, the cause of the symptoms must be investigated immediately.
Due to the potential risk of anticholinergic adverse effects, caution is required when administering to patients with a predisposition to or untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, patients at risk of intestinal or urinary tract obstruction, and patients susceptible to tachyarrhythmias.
Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency should not take this medicinal product.
