Therifamycinsare a group ofantibioticsthat are synthesized either naturally by the bacteriumAmycolatopsis rifamycinicaor artificially. They are a subclass of the larger family ofansamycins. Rifamycins are particularly effective againstmycobacteria, and are therefore used to treattuberculosis, leprosy, andmycobacterium avium complex(MAC) infections.
The rifamycin group includes the classic rifamycin drugs as well as the rifamycin derivativesrifampicin(or rifampin),rifabutin, rifapentine, rifalazilandrifaximin. Rifamycin, sold under the trade name Aemcolo, is approved in the United States for treatment of travelers' diarrhea in some circumstances.
The name "rifamycin" (originally "rifomycin") was derived from the 1955 French filmRififi.
Warnings
• Discontinue rifamycin if diarrhea gets worse or persists for more than 2 days.
• Inform patients that diarrhea can also be caused by antibacterial drugs, which usually ends when that particular drug is discontinued, for which rifamycin may not be effective.
• Rifamycin should only be used to treat bacterial infections, not for viral infections like common cold.
• • If rifamycin dose is skipped or full course is not completed, effectiveness of treatment may be reduced and resistance could be developed.
