Atazanavir, sold under the brand nameReyatazamong others, is anantiretroviral medicationused to treatHIV/AIDS.It is generally recommended for use with other antiretrovirals.It may be used forpost-exposure prophylaxisafter aneedlestick injuryor other potential exposure.It is takenby mouth.
Common side effects includeheadache,nausea,yellowish skin,abdominal pain,trouble sleeping, andfever.Severe side effects include rashes such aserythema multiformeandhigh blood sugar.Atazanavir appears to be safe to use duringpregnancy.It is of theprotease inhibitor(PI) class and works by blockingHIV protease.
Atazanavir was approved for medical use in the United States in 2003.The combinationatazanavir/ritonaviris on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Atazanavir is available as ageneric medication.
