Cephalexin, like the penicillins, is a beta-lactam antibiotic. By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located within the bacterial cell wall, it inhibits the third and final stage of cell wall synthesis.
Cell lysis is then mediated by autolytic enzymes of the bacterial cell wall, such as autolysins; it is possible that cephalexin interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
⚠️ Warnings
Pregnancy
Pregnancy:
The use of cephalexin is not recommended unless clearly necessary.
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding:
Caution is recommended when administering cephalexin during breastfeeding. Cephalexin is excreted in breast milk.
Renal Impairment
Renal Impairment:
Reduce dosage in patients with renal impairment.
If symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if they worsen, consult your doctor.
Cephalexin may cause diarrhoea, which in some cases can be severe. Do not take any medicine to treat diarrhoea without first consulting your doctor.
Antidiarrhoeal medicines may make the diarrhoea worse or last longer. If you have any doubts, or if mild diarrhoea persists or worsens, consult your doctor.
Before undergoing any clinical or laboratory tests, inform your doctor that you are taking cephalexin. The results of some tests may be affected by cephalexin.
