Nafcillin sodiumis anarrow-spectrum,second-generationbeta-lactam antibioticof thepenicillinclass. As abeta-lactamase-resistant penicillin, it is used to treatinfectionscaused byGram-positive bacteria, in particular,speciesofstaphylococcithat areresistantto other penicillins.
Nafcillin is considered therapeutically equivalent tooxacillin, although one retrospective study found greater rates ofhypokalemiaandacute kidney injuryin patients taking nafcillin compared to patients taking oxacillin.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of asthma, hay fever, kidney, liver, gastrointestinal disease, who are taking other medications, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Monitor blood sugar level regularly in diabetic patients while taking this medication.
