Norfloxacin is a bactericidal antibiotic belonging to the quinolone group, used for the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases. A typical indication is urinary tract infections. Its effects are based on the inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Norfloxacin should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after meals. It must not be combined with certain medications, as these can reduce its absorption into the body. The most common possible adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disorders, skin rash, seizures, and vaginal candidiasis. Norfloxacin can cause photosensitivity and is an inhibitor of CYP1A2.
Norfloxacin (ATC J01MA06) has bactericidal properties against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens. Its effects are based on the inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV.
