Emtricitabine/tenofovir(FTC/TDF), sold under the brand nameTruvadaamong others, is afixed-dose combinationantiretroviral medicationused to treat and preventHIV/AIDS.It contains the antiretroviral medicationsemtricitabineandtenofovir disoproxil.For treatment, it must be used in combination with other antiretroviral medications.Forprevention before exposure, in those who are at high risk, it is recommended along withsafer sexpractices.It does not cure HIV/AIDS.Emtricitabine/tenofovir is takenby mouth.
Common side effects include headache, tiredness, trouble sleeping, abdominal pain, weight loss, and rash.Serious side effects may includehigh blood lactate levelsandenlargement of the liver.Use of this medication duringpregnancydoes not appear to harm the fetus, but this has not been well studied.
Emtricitabine/tenofovir was approved for medical use in the United States in 2004.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.In the United States, emtricitabine/tenofovir was under patent byGileaduntil 2020, but is now available as a generic worldwide.In 2023, it was the 205th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than two million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of hepatitis B, kidney disease, lactic acidosis, liver disease, obesity, any allergy, who are taking other medications, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• It does not stop the spread of HIV to others; avoid sexual contacts, sharing of needles, or injection supplies.
• Monitor liver and kidney function regularly while taking this medication.
