Thepharmacokinetics of progesteroneconcerns thepharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and variousroutes of administrationofprogesterone.
Progesterone is anaturally occurringandbioidenticalprogestogen, or anagonistof theprogesterone receptor, thebiological targetofprogestogenslikeendogenousprogesterone.Progesterone also hasantimineralocorticoidandinhibitoryneurosteroidactivity, whereas it appears to have little or noglucocorticoidorantiandrogenicactivity and has noandrogenicactivity.Because of its progestogenic activity, progesterone has functionalantiestrogeniceffects in certaintissuessuch as theuterus, cervix, andvagina. In addition, progesterone hasantigonadotropiceffects due to its progestogenic activity and can inhibitfertilityand suppresssex hormoneproduction.Progesterone differs fromprogestins(syntheticprogestogens) likemedroxyprogesterone acetateandnorethisterone, with implications forpharmacodynamicsandpharmacokineticsas well asefficacy, tolerability, andsafety.
Progesterone can be takenby mouth,in through the vagina, and byinjectionintomuscleorfat, among other routes.Aprogesterone vaginal ringand progesteroneintrauterine deviceare also available as pharmaceutical products.
