Miconazole is an antifungal agent of the azole class used to treat fungal infections. Its effects are based on inhibition of ergosterol synthesis through blockade of the enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase in fungi. Miconazole is administered topically, typically twice daily. Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions such as burning, erythema, and irritation. Miconazole is an inhibitor of CYP450 isoenzymes.
Miconazole (ATC D01AC02) has antifungal activity against dermatophytes, yeasts, moulds, and dimorphic fungi. It is also active against certain bacteria. Its effects are based on inhibition of the enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase in fungi.
This inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol from lanosterol, leading to accumulation of toxic precursors and disruption of fungal cell membrane assembly.
