Pharmacotherapeutic group: Expectorants, excluding combinations with cough suppressants; mucolytics. ATC code: R05CB06.
Preclinical studies have shown that ambroxol hydrochloride, the active substance of Ambrobene, increases mucus secretion in the respiratory tract. It enhances pulmonary surfactant production and stimulates ciliary activity. These actions improve mucociliary transport (mucociliary clearance), an effect that has been confirmed in clinical pharmacology studies. The increase in mucus secretion and mucociliary clearance facilitates expectoration and relieves cough.
⚠️ Warnings
Reports of severe cutaneous reactions associated with the administration of ambroxol hydrochloride have been received, including erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP). If symptoms or signs of a progressive skin rash develop (sometimes with blistering or mucosal lesions), administration of ambroxol hydrochloride must be discontinued immediately and medical advice sought.
