Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antipruritics, including antihistamines, anaesthetics, etc. Antihistamines for topical use.
ATC code: D04AA13
Mechanism of action and pharmacodynamic effects
Dimetindene maleate is a histamine H1-receptor antagonist with high binding affinity for these receptors. It therefore markedly reduces capillary hyperpermeability associated with immediate hypersensitivity reactions. When applied topically, dimetindene maleate also exhibits local anaesthetic activity.
Dimetindene maleate counteracts pruritus of various aetiologies and rapidly relieves itching and irritation. The lubricating base facilitates penetration of the active substance into the skin.
