Side effects include irregular periods, benignovarian cysts, pelvic pain, and depression.Rarelyuterine perforationmay occur.Use is not recommended duringpregnancybut is safe withbreastfeeding.The IUD with progestogen is a type oflong-acting reversible birth control.It works by thickening themucusat the opening of thecervix, stopping the buildup of thelining of the uterus, and occasionally preventingovulation.
The IUD with levonorgestrel was first approved for medical use in 1990 in Finland and in the United States in 2000.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
