Lamivudine, commonly called3TC, is anantiretroviral medicationused to prevent and treatHIV/AIDS.It is also used to treat chronichepatitis Bwhen other options are not possible.It is effective against bothHIV-1andHIV-2.It is typically used in combination with other antiretrovirals such aszidovudine,dolutegravir, andabacavir.Lamivudine may be included as part ofpost-exposure preventionin those who have been potentially exposed to HIV.Lamivudine is taken by mouth as a liquid or tablet.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headaches,feeling tired, and cough.Serious side effects includeliver disease,lactic acidosis, and worsening hepatitis B among those already infected.It is safe for people over three months of age and can be used duringpregnancy.The medication can be taken with or without food.Lamivudine is anucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitorand works by blocking theHIV reverse transcriptaseand hepatitis B virus polymerase.
Lamivudine was patented in 1995 and approved for use in the United States in 1995.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.It is available as ageneric medication.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of hepatitis B, kidney disease, pancreas disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause drowsiness or dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
• It should not be used in children less than 2 years old.
• It may affect blood sugar level; monitor sugar level regularly while taking this medication.
