Pharmacotherapeutic group: venoactive agent, antivaricose agent
ATC code: C05BX01
Calcium dobesilate acts on the capillary wall by restoring its impaired physiological functions—increased permeability and reduced resistance. It enhances erythrocyte flexibility, inhibits platelet aggregation, and, in diabetic retinopathy, reduces plasma and blood viscosity, thereby improving the rheological properties of blood and tissue perfusion. These properties help correct capillary dysfunction, whether functional or due to congenital or acquired metabolic disorders. Calcium dobesilate also helps reduce oedema.
⚠️ Warnings
In cases of severe renal insufficiency requiring dialysis, the dose may be reduced.
In very rare cases, administration of calcium dobesilate may cause agranulocytosis (see section 4.8). In such cases, symptoms may include high fever, oral cavity infection (tonsillitis), sore throat, anogenital inflammation, and other signs commonly associated with infection. If any of these symptoms occur, treatment must be discontinued. A complete blood count and white blood cell differential must then be performed immediately.
Doxium 500 may cause severe hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylactic reaction or shock). In the event of hypersensitivity reactions, treatment must be discontinued.
Elderly patients
The elderly population was well represented in clinical studies with calcium dobesilate, and no concerns regarding overall safety were identified.
Paediatric population
No studies have been conducted on the use of calcium dobesilate in the paediatric population.
