Pharmacotherapeutic group: Calcium, combinations with vitamin D and/or other agents. ATC code: A12AX
Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the human body, with the greatest proportion stored in the skeleton. It is a divalent cation essential for the nervous system, muscles, skeleton, cell wall integrity, and capillary permeability. It is also important for blood coagulation, the conduction of nerve impulses, and the transmission of electrical signals within the heart. Calcium stimulates gastrin secretion. It accumulates in atherosclerotic plaques, although no causal relationship with exogenous calcium intake has been established. Calcium balance is regulated by parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, calcitonin, glucocorticoids, and magnesium. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream.
⚠️ Warnings
Caution is required in patients with diarrhoea, cardiac disease, renal disease, sarcoidosis, or malabsorption disorders.
In children and adolescents, the product should be used only under medical supervision.
Concomitant administration of medicinal products or dietary supplements containing calcium or vitamin D requires careful medical supervision and monitoring of calcium levels in blood and urine.
When fluoride preparations are used concurrently, the dosing interval should be adjusted so that an appropriate time gap (at least 2 hours) is maintained between the products; otherwise, insoluble calcium fluoride may form.
With prolonged use, adverse effects occur more frequently. Laboratory monitoring of serum and urinary calcium levels, as well as blood pressure, is recommended.
