Compared withwarfarin, it has fewerdrug interactions,and does not require regular assessment of blood samples forprothrombin timeto assure safe anticoagulant therapy.
It was developed byDaiichi Sankyoand approved in July 2011, in Japan for prevention ofvenous thromboembolismsfollowing lower-limborthopedic surgery.It was also approved in the United States by theFood and Drug Administration(FDA) in January 2015, for the prevention of stroke and non–central-nervous-system systemicembolism.It was approved for use in the European Union in June 2015.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
