Dapagliflozin, sold under the brand namesFarxiga(US) andForxiga(EU) among others, is a medication used to treattype2 diabetes.It is also used to treat adults withheart failureandchronic kidney disease.It reversiblyinhibits sodium-glucose co-transporter 2(SGLT-2) in the renalproximal convoluted tubuleto reduce glucose reabsorption and increase urinary glucose excretion.
Common side effects includehypoglycaemia(low blood sugar), urinary tract infections, genital infections, andvolume depletion(reduced amount of water in the body).Diabetic ketoacidosisis a common side effect in people withtype1 diabetes.Serious but rare side effects includeFournier gangrene.
It was developed byBristol-Myers Squibbin partnership withAstraZeneca. It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.In 2023, it was the 92nd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 7million prescriptions.Dapagliflozin is available as ageneric medication.
⚠️ Warnings
• Dapagliflozin may cause serious kidney problems, therefore monitor kidney functions while taking the drug.
• • Consult the doctor before having any surgery, even a dental surgery, while taking medicine.
• • Get up slowly from the lying position; dapagliflozin may cause low blood pressure resulting in dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting.
• • Dapagliflozin interacts with the urine glucose test. A urine glucose test is often carried out to measure the quantity of glucose present in the urine sample of diabetes patients. The urine may test positive for glucose if the patient is taking dapagliflozin even if glucose is absent. Therefore, alternative methods have to be followed to test sugar levels in patients taking dapagliflozin.
