Breast-feeding:
This product should only be used during breast-feeding when strictly indicated.
Policresulen is for topical use only.
Policresulen is not effective against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea and syphilis. Policresulen should only be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding when strictly indicated and after due consideration of the risks to the mother and child, as no relevant studies on its safe use in women under these conditions are available. Animal studies have shown no evidence of foetal malformation.
The use of the Concentrated Solution for cauterisation of the uterine cervix during pregnancy should be avoided, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy, as it may trigger the onset of labour. Application to the cervical portion and the adjacent vaginal region should be performed with due care and is recommended only for strictly defined indications.
No information is available on excretion of the active substance in breast milk.
During vaginal treatment with policresulen, genital washing with irritant soaps should be avoided. Use during menstruation should be avoided. Sexual intercourse should be avoided during the treatment period and for seven days thereafter.
Policresulen produces a significant cicatricial reaction. Accordingly, after a few days of treatment, an accumulation of policresulen and remnants of epithelial cells (damaged/necrotic tissue) in the vagina is common. This tissue shedding is part of the product's mechanism of action. This accumulation is generally expelled spontaneously through the vagina as a thick, whitish discharge (resembling "cream") or sometimes light brown in colour.
The use of sanitary pads is recommended; these should be changed regularly to prevent vulvar irritation. In some cases, when the accumulation is significant, it may need to be removed by the physician under speculum visualisation to avoid local irritation and patient discomfort. After application of the Concentrated Solution or Gel over large areas of the oral mucosa and/or gingiva, thorough rinsing of the area is recommended, as the preparation, due to its high degree of acidity, may cause demineralisation of dental enamel.
To avoid oesophageal erosion, policresulen must not be ingested. If accidentally ingested, the individual should immediately drink copious amounts of water. In the case of ingestion of the Concentrated Solution, a physician should be consulted for immediate treatment to prevent erosions of the mouth, throat and oesophagus.
Avoid contact of the product with the eyes. If the product comes into contact with the eyes, rinse thoroughly with copious amounts of water until the product is completely removed. In cases of significant eye irritation, consult an ophthalmologist.
Textile or leather products that come into contact with policresulen should be immediately rinsed with water before drying. Instruments should be placed in a container of water (which may contain 1–2% sodium bicarbonate) immediately after use, before sterilisation.
