Pharmacotherapeutic group: Stomatological preparations, agents for the prevention of dental caries, ATC code: A01AA01.
Mechanism of action:
Sodium fluoride increases the resistance of the teeth to dental caries. Tooth enamel thus becomes more resistant to the acids produced by the bacteria of dental plaque. Sodium fluoride enables remineralisation of the teeth and reduces microbial acid production. Fluoridation should begin before the teeth erupt and should continue throughout life. Before the teeth erupt, fluoride reaches the developing teeth via the bloodstream, allowing effective fluoridation even before eruption. After eruption, the teeth receive fluoride through direct contact with the fluoride contained in saliva.
Warnings
In patients with impaired renal function, the product should be administered only after consultation with the treating physician.
When fluoride is administered, the amount of fluoride the individual receives from other sources must be known in order to avoid overdose. Where fluoridation of table salt and water occurs, the dose of Zymafluor must be reduced. If the water contains more than 0.7 mg/l of fluoride, further fluoride administration is not recommended.
