Pharmacotherapeutic group: Expectorants, excluding combinations with cough suppressants; mucolytics. ATC code: R05CB06
Preclinical studies have shown that ambroxol hydrochloride, the active substance of Ambrobene, increases mucus secretion in the respiratory tract. It enhances the production of pulmonary surfactant and stimulates ciliary activity. This action leads to improved mucosal transport (mucociliary clearance). Improvement in mucociliary clearance has been demonstrated in clinical pharmacology studies. Increased mucus secretion and mucociliary clearance facilitate expectoration and relieve coughing.
⚠️ Warnings
Reports of severe cutaneous reactions associated with the administration of ambroxol hydrochloride have been received, such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP). If symptoms or signs of a progressive skin rash (sometimes with blisters or mucosal lesions) appear, ambroxol hydrochloride must be discontinued immediately and medical advice sought.
