Alfuzosin is an active substance belonging to the alpha-blocker class, used for the treatment of symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It relaxes the smooth muscle of the prostate and urethra, thereby increasing urinary flow, improving voiding, and alleviating storage symptoms. The effects have a rapid onset. Alfuzosin may lower blood pressure and consequently lead to adverse effects such as syncope, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, malaise, and headache.
Alfuzosin (ATC G04CA01) acts as a selective antagonist at postsynaptic α1-adrenoreceptors, thereby relaxing the smooth muscle of the prostate and urethra. This increases urinary flow and improves both voiding and storage symptoms. Compared with 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, the effects have a rapid onset, occurring within hours to days. Alfuzosin has no effect on prostate size and is effective only against symptoms. Alfuzosin may lower blood pressure (see Adverse Effects).
