Alfuzosin is an active substance from the group of alpha-blockers used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It relaxes the smooth muscle of the prostate and urethra. This increases urinary flow, improves voiding and storage symptoms. The effects occur rapidly. Alfuzosin can lower blood pressure and therefore may cause adverse effects such as syncope, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, malaise, and headache.
Alfuzosin (ATC G04CA01) selectively binds as an antagonist to postsynaptic α1-adrenoreceptors, thereby relaxing the smooth muscle of the prostate and urethra. This increases urinary flow and improves voiding and storage symptoms. Compared with 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, the effects occur rapidly, within hours to days. Alfuzosin has no effect on the size of the prostate; it is effective only against the symptoms. Alfuzosin can lower blood pressure (see Adverse Effects).
