Loxapine, sold under the brand namesLoxitaneandAdasuve(inhalationonly) among others, is atricyclicantipsychoticmedication used primarily in the treatment ofschizophreniaandbipolar disorder. It is a member of thedibenzoxazepineclass and structurally very similar toclozapine. Several researchers have argued that loxapine, initially classified as atypical antipsychotic, behaves as anatypical antipsychotic.
Loxapine may be metabolized byN-demethylation toamoxapine, atricyclic antidepressant.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of seizures, difficulty in urinating, increased eye pressure, breast cancer, brain tumor, heart disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.
• Avoid alcohol consumption.
• Do not become overheated; otherwise it may cause heat stroke.
• Patient may develop with increased risk of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) with the following symptoms: increased body heat, muscle rigidity, altered mental abilities. If it so consult with your doctor.
