Imiquimod, sold under the brand nameAldaraamong others, is amedicationthat acts as animmune response modifierthat is used to treatgenital warts, superficialbasal cell carcinoma, andactinic keratosis.
Scientists at3M's pharmaceuticals division discovered the drug and 3M obtained the first FDA approval in 1997. As of 2015, imiquimod is generic and is available worldwide under many brands. In 2021, it was the 290th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 600,000 prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of poor immune system, autoimmune disorder, human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, other types of skin cancer, broken, damaged or inflamed skin, any allergy, who are taking other medications, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• For external use only; avoid contact with vagina, eyes, nose, mouth, lips.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight.
