Erlotinib, sold under the brand nameTarcevaamong others, is amedicationused to treatnon-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) andpancreatic cancer.Specifically it is used for NSCLC with mutations in theepidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) — either an exon 19 deletion (del19) or exon 21 (L858R) substitution mutation — which hasspread to other parts of the body.It is takenby mouth.
Common side effects include rash, diarrhea, muscle pain, joint pain, and cough.Serious side effects may include lung problems,kidney problems,liver failure,gastrointestinal perforation,stroke, andcorneal ulceration.Use inpregnancymay harm the baby.It is a receptortyrosine kinase inhibitor, which acts on theepidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR).
Erlotinib was approved for medical use in the United States in 2004.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of stomach problem, liver, kidney, or heart disease, dehydration, had radiation therapy, any allergy, who are taking other medications, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may reduce platelet counts; avoid injury or bruising.
• Avoid exposure to sunlight; otherwise it may cause sunburn easily.
• Monitor liver, kidney or lung function, eye examinations, and blood electrolytes regularly while taking this medication.
• Avoid contact with people who have infections.
