Insulin aspart, sold under the brand nameNovolog, among others, is amodifiedtype ofmedical insulinused to treattype 1andtype 2 diabetes.It is generally used byinjection under the skin(into the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, or upper arms) but may also be used byinjection into a vein.Maximum effect occurs after about 1–3 hours and lasts for 3–5 hours.Generally a longer-acting insulin likeinsulin NPHis also needed.
Common side effects includelow blood sugar,allergic reactions,itchiness, and pain at the site of injection.Other common side effects may include injection site reactions, itching, rash, lipodystrophy (skin thickening or pitting at the injection site), weight gain and swelling of hands and feet.Other serious side effects may includelow blood potassium(hypokalemia),low blood sugar(hypoglycemia),and severe allergic reactions.Use inpregnancyandbreastfeedingis generally safe.It works the same ashuman insulinby increasing the amount ofglucosethat tissues take in and decreasing the amount of glucose made by the liver.It is a manufactured form of human insulin; where a singleamino acidhas been changed, specifically aprolinewith anaspartic acidat the B28 position.
Insulin aspart was approved for medical use in the United States in 2000.In 2023, it was the 102nd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 6million prescriptions.Manufacturing involvesyeast, which have had thegenefor insulin aspart put into theirgenome.This yeast then makes the insulin, which is harvested from thebioreactor.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
⚠️ Warnings
•Avoid changing the type of insulin, without health care provider’s advice.
• It may harm liver or kidney functions.
• Monitor serum glucose, potassium, electrolytes, HbA1c and lipid profile regularly.
• Precautions should be taken during concomitant illness especially infections low level potassium in blood.
• Change the injection site within the same area.
Developing a fever or infection, eating significantly more than prescribed, or missing your dose of insulin may cause high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver disease, nerve problems, adrenal, pituitary or thyroid problems, diabetic ketoacidosis, alcoholism, smoking habit, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
