Nomegestrol acetate(NOMAC), sold under the brand namesLutenylandZoelyamong others, is aprogestinmedication which is used inbirth control pills,menopausal hormone therapy, and for the treatment ofgynecological disorders.It is available both alone and in combination with anestrogen.NOMAC is takenby mouth.Abirth control implantfor placementunder the skinwas also developed but ultimately was not marketed.
Side effectsof NOMAC includemenstrual irregularities,headaches,nausea,breast tenderness, and others.NOMAC is a progestin, or asyntheticprogestogen, and hence is anagonistof theprogesterone receptor, thebiological targetof progestogens likeprogesterone.It has someantiandrogenicactivity and no other importanthormonalactivity.
Nomegestrol, a related compound, was patented in 1975, and NOMAC was described in 1983.NOMAC was first introduced for medical use, for the treatment of gynecological disorders and in menopausal hormone therapy, inEuropein 1986.It was subsequently approved in Europe in 2011 as a component of birth control pills.NOMAC is available widely throughout the world.It is not available in theUnited StatesorCanada.
Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of blood clot events, stroke, diabetes, kidney, liver disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
• It is not intended for use in the prevention of weight loss.
• It should not be used in children.
