Budesonide, sold under the brand namePulmicort, among others, is asteroid medication.It is available as aninhaler,nebulization solution,pill,nasal spray, andrectal foam.The inhaled form is used in the long-term management ofasthmaandchronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).The nasal spray is used forallergic rhinitisandnasal polyps.Modified-release pills or capsulesand rectal forms may be used forinflammatory bowel diseaseincludingCrohn's disease,ulcerative colitis, andmicroscopic colitis.
Commonside effectswith the inhaled form includerespiratory infections, cough, and headaches.Common side effects with the pills include feeling tired, vomiting, andjoint pains.Serious side effects include an increased risk of infection, loss of bone strength, andcataracts.Long-term use of the pill form may causeadrenal insufficiency.Stopping the pills suddenly following long-term use may therefore be dangerous.The inhaled form is generally safe inpregnancy.Budesonide chiefly acts as aglucocorticoid.
Budesonide was initially patented in 1973.Commercial use as an asthma medication began in 1981.It is on theWorld Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.Some forms are available as ageneric medication.In 2023, it was the 162nd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 3million prescriptions.
⚠️ Warnings
• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of tuberculosis, infections, diabetes, increased eye pressure, high blood pressure, weak bones, stomach ulcer, who are taking other medications, bleeding problems, cataracts, or liver disease, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Patient may develop with extreme tiredness or weakness, if it is so consult with your doctor.
• Do not stop this medication without your healthcare provider’s advice.
• Avoid vaccination while taking this medication.
• If condition worsens, contact your doctor.
