Diclofenac, sold under the brand nameVoltarenamong others, is anonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAID) used to treatpainandinflammatory diseasessuch asgout.It can be takenorally(swallowed by mouth), insertedrectallyas asuppository, injectedintramuscularly, injectedintravenously,applied to the skin topically, orthrough eye drops.Improvements in pain last up to eight hours.It is also available as thefixed-dose combinationdiclofenac/misoprostol(Arthrotec) to help protect the stomach; however,proton pump inhibitorssuch asomeprazoleare typically first-line since they are at least as effective as misoprostol, but with better tolerability.
Common side effects includeabdominal pain,gastrointestinal bleeding, nausea, dizziness, headache, and swelling.Serious side effects may includeheart disease,stroke,kidney problems, andstomach ulceration.Use is not recommended in thethird trimester of pregnancy.It is likely safe duringbreastfeeding.Diclofenac is believed to work by decreasing the production ofprostaglandins, like other drugs in this class.
