Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is approved as a second-line agent for the treatment of acute pain and dysmenorrhoea. In 2011, the indications were restricted due to rare hepatotoxicity, and it is no longer approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis. The most common adverse effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and elevated liver enzymes. Very rarely, severe hepatic injury has been reported, which in extremely rare cases may have a fatal outcome.
Nimesulide (ATC M01AX17) has analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its effects are mediated through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis via selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2).
