Drospirenoneis aprogestinandantiandrogenmedication which is used inbirth control pillsto preventpregnancyand inmenopausal hormone therapy, among other uses.It is available both alone under the brand nameSlyndand in combination with anestrogenunder the brand nameYasminamong others. The medication is ananalogof the drugspironolactone.Drospirenone is takenby mouth.
Commonside effectsincludeacne, headache, breast tenderness, weight increase, andmenstrual changes.Rare side effects may includehigh potassium levelsandblood clots(when taken as a combined oestrogen-progestogen pill), among others.Drospirenone is a progestin, or asyntheticprogestogen, and hence is anagonistof theprogesterone receptor, thebiological targetof progestogens likeprogesterone. It has additionalantimineralocorticoidandantiandrogenicactivity and no other importanthormonalactivity.Because of its antimineralocorticoid activity and lack of undesirableoff-target activity, drospirenone is said to more closely resemblebioidenticalprogesteronethan other progestins.
Drospirenone was patented in 1976 and introduced for medical use in 2000.It is available widely throughout the world. The medication is sometimes referred to as a "fourth-generation" progestin. It is available as ageneric medication. In 2020, a formulation of drospirenone withethinylestradiolwas the 145th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 4million prescriptions.
