Desmopressin is an antidiuretic agent from the ADH analogue group, used primarily for the treatment of bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) and central diabetes insipidus. Additional indications exist. Desmopressin is a derivative of the natural antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) with a longer half-life and reduced effects on blood vessels, blood pressure, and the uterus. Various pharmaceutical formulations are available for parenteral, oral, intranasal, and sublingual administration. The most common possible adverse effects include headache, gastrointestinal disturbances, hypotension, increased heart rate, flushing, and fatigue.
Desmopressin (ATC H01BA02) has antidiuretic properties. Compared with the natural hormone vasopressin, it has a longer duration of action and reduced effects on blood vessels, blood pressure, and the uterus.
The hormone vasopressin increases water reabsorption at the collecting duct of the nephron in the kidney and has vasoconstrictive properties, which raises blood pressure. Furthermore, vasopressin also exerts functions in the central nervous system. It has a short half-life.
