Azelastine is an antiallergic active substance belonging to the group of second-generation antihistamines. It is used in the form of nasal sprays or eye drops for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, hay fever, and allergic conjunctivitis. Adverse effects include, among others, taste disturbances due to the bitter taste of the active substance itself, local reactions, and rarely systemic side effects such as fatigue, headache, or dizziness.
Azelastine (ATC R01AC03, ATC R06AX19, ATC S01GX07) has antiallergic, antihistaminic, and anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits the formation and release of inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes. It has a high affinity for the H1 receptor, binds less strongly to the H2 receptor, and relieves the symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as itching, sneezing, nasal congestion, and ocular symptoms.
The onset of action is rapid, occurring within approximately 15 to 30 minutes with nasal administration, and lasts up to 12 hours. Efficacy has been documented in clinical studies. Azelastine is not cardiotoxic.
